Everything starts with a beat. For Atlanta songwriter, Brock Scott, that’s all he needs to grab you with the impeccable “neo-folk” songwriting in his new album, “EP1”.
Packed within this magical five song EP is a vast expanse of musical territories covered. “EP1” is an album for people to dance and think to. Bringing in a broad vocabulary of sound from a string quartet, upright bass, saxophone, clarinet, flute, looped and live drums all accompanying Scott’s exploratory guitar work, there’s a lot of room to explore. Compiling folksy tendencies, Brock effortlessly bridges French influences akin to the likes of Serge Gainsbourg, to backbeat laden Motown grooves, to the hazy dream stylings of Bon Iver all laid out in a colorful yet morose synth atmosphere reminiscent of Blade Runner.
Brock Scott has gone solo but that doesn’t mean he’s alone. He’s used social media as a tool to connect with musicians across the globe, enlisting the likes of UK-based Beau Diakowicz as well as bringing in heavy-hitting players from Little Tybee.
“EP1” is a sign of many powerful things, and one of the most striking qualities of this debut solo endeavor is the far-reaching sonic influences that paint this audio canvas. Brock moves mountains with this album. And after multiple listens of this colorful outburst, you’ll instantly be waiting for future EPs.
